Day 5 Day 6 - Continue down into Northern Sahara

Day 7

Morning and the locals turn up to have another nosey and see if theres any more footballs or pens to be had.
Wrong Way Down have learnt the valuable lesson that Argos indoor sleeping bags are not really adequate for High Atlas use.

Theres no time for chinwagging and we're off again.

Descending from the Atlas into Er Raichida we bid our travelling companions a temporary farewell as they are keen to press on ahead of the game, whereas we fancy a taste of Northern Sahara Dessert! (do you see what I did there?)

More fancy archways as we roll through some smaller towns towards Erfoud and the end of the tarmac.

Ah thats what we were looking for - some big piles of sand!

Starting to see other hardcore overlanding vehicles like our own, none of this old banger stuff down here!

A spot of quick refreshment.

One last military base.

and the road comes to an end!

Just gravelly tracks

and sand ruts.

Stark contrast between the flat plains and the hills.

First sighting of camels.

The Panda passes them in a blur!

A local approachs as the going gets rougher. He tells us that our car is too small the the sand is too deep.

What does he know, c'est un FIAT Panda!

So we ignore him and carry on.

Plenty of 'little' Auberges round here if we were too lazy to camp.

Navigating round here would be proper tricky without the trusty GPS.

Crusing over a big flat clay pan we meet a load more camels. If we break down here we might be riding one out!

Shortly after this we got stuck, it turns out the local guy wasn't joking about the soft sand! We also realised why proper sump guards have holes cut in them, because otherwise sand is liable clog around your shifting mechanism and leave you unable to change gear!
As it started to get dark we wrestled around in some pretty deep stuff, before heading back a little way to camp and take stock of the situation.

Unbelievable stars at night out here.
